Just when people thought the Republican field for Presidential candidates couldn’t any more cramped, it did. Cue Rick Santorum, a fifty something ex-senator. This is a man who once brazenly stated that President Obama subscribed to a ‘phony theology’ and that the religious views of politicians are significant. He also went on to cite examples such as increasing support for gay marriage as the symptoms of indoctrination in colleges. I never knew that such tolerance equated to being manipulated.
The qualm I have is not only the prejudices this man holds, but the sheer incredulity of his past statements. This is a man who once stated that “legal euthanasia is responsible for “10 percent of all deaths for the Netherlands” when in actuality it constitutes little over 2. He remarked that ‘the Obama Department of Justice seems to favor pornographers over children and families’, which I frankly shouldn’t even give the grace of replying to. I’m not even going to critique his economic policy (I’m no Friedman) but the guy is way too disingenuous for my liking in the first place.

So, does Santorum actually stand a chance? While he does retain the support of some Evangelicals, with more popular candidates like Rand Paul and even the underdog Ben Carson garnering more attention than him, I find it hard to see him going far. He definitely won’t reach the heights he did back in 2012, where he place a comfortable second to Mitt Romney in the primaries. I’m predicting a 3rd place for him at best in the Primaries next year. I suppose there is prospect of him being chose as a running mate by a leading candidate but I’m definitely doubting his ability to convince millions once more that he’s the right man to lead America, or even helping in leading it. Surely he can’t?
